I welcome you all to the Department of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology, University of Nigeria. It is the largest department in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, UNN with three large units viz: Veterinary Biochemistry, Veterinary Physiology and Veterinary Pharmacology & Toxicology.

At the undergraduate level, Veterinary Biochemistry unit offers three courses covering Introductory Veterinary Biochemistry, General Veterinary Biochemistry and Biochemistry of Body Fluids while the Veterinary Physiology covers Introductory, Reproduction, endocrinology, blood, cardiovascular, respiratory and comparative Physiology. Renal function and body fluid, neuromuscular system, sense organs and environmental physiology are among the courses we offer in Veterinary Physiology. In Veterinary pharmacology and toxicology, we teach Systemic Pharmacology, General Pharmacology, Chemotherapy and Toxicology.

The department also offers postgraduate studies. The Master of Science (M. Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree programs of the Department of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology are designed to train experts needed to work in various sectors of the livestock industry or engage in research and teaching of pre-clinical subjects in veterinary schools and animal health departments of other tertiary institutions. The programs are aimed at improving the supply of specialized manpower in the areas of Veterinary Biochemistry, Veterinary Pharmacology, Veterinary Physiology and Veterinary Toxicology.

Department of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology houses STEP-B (Science Technology Education Post-Basic) laboratory which is a drug discovery laboratory, a world bank project. Here, we perform cutting-edge researches that culminate in drug discovery ranging from modern methods of extraction, identification and isolation of active therapeutic ingredients present in plant extracts etc.

Currently, the department has 25 members of staff made up of 17 academic staff and 8 non-teaching staff. Out of the 17 academic staff, 5 are professors and 5 associate professors while the remaining 7 are in the categories of lecturers I (3) & lecturers II (4). Associate professor Patrick E. Aba is the current substantive head of the department.
